Our Values & Beliefs
OUR VALUES
- HOPE: Like the Kingdom of God, we know that the best is yet to come and the best is also here now.
- CONNECTION: We work to build intergenerational relationships with each other and with God, so that we do not simply survive, but thrive as human beings.
- MISSION: Drawn by the Spirit's call, we engage in tangible acts of service, as the hands and feet of Christ in our community.
- RENEWAL: Believing that Christ makes all things new, we seek the Spirit's guidance on the journey of faith, moving towards the evolving truth that God never gives up on humanity.
- LOVE: Inspired by the word hesed in scripture, we are called to show love that is compassionate, accepting, full of grace, mercy, forgiveness, and forbearance; love that is authentic and messy, unconditional and vulnerable, and is committed to action.
OUR BELIEFS
"Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve." - from "A Brief Statement of Faith of the Presbyterian Church (USA)"
Grace Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States.
The Presbyterian tradition finds its roots in the Protestant Reformation, particularly through the teachings and theology of reformer John Calvin. The Presbyterian Church (USA) places its theological emphasis on GRACE - particularly the free gift of grace given to us by God in Jesus Christ.
And because we are freely given grace, even when we do not deserve it, we are to give grace to others so that we live out the Great Commandments to "love the Lord your God...and to love your neighbor as yourself" and follow the Great Commission to "go into all the world and make disciples of all nations."
Our church is governed NOT by the clergy, but by the people - elected from among the congregation by the congregation. These elected leaders are ordained to their particular ministry. Ruling Elders are elected and ordained to the Ministry of Discernment & Governance as they prayerfully make the decisions that determine the mission and direction of the congregation. Deacons are elected and ordained to the Ministry of Compassion & Service as they share the work of pastoral care, prayer, and service to the members of the congregation. The Pastor - also called the Teaching Elder or Minister of Word & Sacrament - is called and elected by the congregation to teach the Word of God, to administer the sacraments of baptism and communion, and to shepherd the congregation members into the work of ministry to which ALL Christians are called.
